Teton Ridge Race a success!

January 17th, 2010

Dan & Mellissa Struebel and TVTAP with it’s many volunteers threw another great Teton ridge Classic race Saturday. After a slow start to sign ups the race brought out 133 skiers to nicely groomed tracks in some of the best classic skiing terrain anywhere. Kids raced a 5K loop, others competed in the 14k (one lap) & the hotly contested 28k two lap course. This is a real community event (TVTAP fundraiser) and it was great to see people  come out and enjoy the Teton Ridge Ranch’s beautiful setting.

Overall 28k winner Jon Engen heads to the finish line

While the races were competitive the real competition came after the race in the soup line

We’ll be focusing on waxing classic skis to help make your skis extra fast for the TRC, but bring your questions for waxing skate, backcountry and alpine skis/boards as well.

Touring in Teton Canyon

January 8th, 2010

AJ, Rich and John Fitzgerald took advantage of the foot of new snow, cold temperatures and sunny skies for a perfect powder day in Teton Canyon.

The warming weather today is creating high avalanche danger with many slopes releasing naturally and big. It’s a great time to establish or refine your avalanche skills. The next Yostmark Level 1 Avalanche course will be Jan. 22-24 ($225/person). Call the shop for more information…….stay safe out there.

Hang in there Big Wally, we’re rooting for you.

Ski Education Foundation Avalanche Course

January 4th, 2010

One of the coaches for the Teton Valley Ski Education Foundation asked Yostmark to run a Level 1 Avalanche Course for some of his junior athletes, so AJ spent 3 Sundays in December teaching and touring with some great kids.  AJ said, “It was pretty fun working with a younger audience–RJ and Tristan are 13 and Kayla is 16.”

They started with a morning classroom session at Grand Targhee Ski Resort, and then spent that afternoon in the meadows near the base area practicing transceiver rescue techniques.  The following Sunday was an all-day tour from Teton Pass out to Edelweis Bowl, followed by a tour to Thanksgiving Bowl on the last Sunday with an afternoon wrap-up in the classroom. AJ said one of the most remarkable parts of this course was the opportunity to see the snowpack change over a 3-week period, going from shallow facets to a deeper snowpack with significant reactivity.  The group found fantastic skiing, and the students were able to see impressive failures in test pits.

Another Level 1 course is coming up on January 22-24. For more information and to sign up contact us at the shop, 208-354-2828 or info@yostmark.com.

See you out there!

AJ finds powder

January 1st, 2010

Finally!

AJ Linnel and friend Nate made the most of the last day of 2009 skiing the morning session in Columbia bowls on Teton pass, wonder where he is today? AJ is the Lead guide for Yostmark Backcountry tours and spends his afternoons in the store basement listening to NPR, having snacks with his dog Bode and getting after a bit of ski tuning.
